OpenJPEG is an open-source JPEG 2000 codec written in C language. It has been developed in order to promote the use of JPEG 2000, a still-image compression standard from the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG).Since may 2015, it is officially recognized by ISO/IEC and ITU-T as a JPEG 2000 Reference Software.

Who can use the code ?

Anyone. As the OpenJPEG code is released under the 2-clauses BSD license, anyone can use or modify the code, even for commercial applications. The only restriction is to retain the copyright in the sources or in the binaries documentation. Of course, if you modified the code in a way that might be of interest for other users, you are encouraged to share it (through a github pull request or by filling an issue) but this is not a requirement.

Who supports the project ?

The library has been created and is still maintained by the Image and Signal Processing Group (ISPGroup), in the Universit茅 de Louvain (UCL). It has been long-term supported by intoPIX and also punctually by

the Digital Signal Processing Lab (DSPLab) of the University of Perugia, Italy (UNIPG) for the JPWL implementation (2006)the Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES) for the work on OpenJPEG 2.0 (2011-2012)It currently benefits from a funding from several academic institutions and archival organizations:Wellcome LibraryStanford UniversityNationale Bibliotheek van Nederland (KBNL)University of MichiganUniversity of California, Los Angeles (UCLA)This funding has been made possible thanks to the support of the International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF) and the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR). As announced here, the goal of this funding is to improve the speed and robustness of the library. Releases with better performances are therefore expected by the end of 2017.https://www.shan-machinery.com
